KNOW GOD FOR YOURSELF
Text: Acts 17:11
“These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.”
Message:
One of the most dangerous things in the Christian life is believing something simply because someone you respect said it.
“My pastor said…”
“My papa said…”
“My prophet said…”
“My church said…”
But the question is:
“What does God say?”
Respect your pastor. Honour your spiritual leaders. Learn from those who have gone ahead of you. But never surrender your personal responsibility to know God’s Word.
The Bereans did not reject Paul’s teaching, but they searched the Scriptures to find out whether what they were being taught was true.
That is spiritual maturity.
Some people have been sincerely following wrong teachings simply because they never opened the Bible to check.
They have never asked:
“Where is this written?”
“What does Scripture actually say?”
“Is this God’s Word, or merely someone’s interpretation of God’s Word?”
And this is where many people become vulnerable to manipulation and spiritual error.
You cannot build your entire faith on “somebody said. One day, your faith must move from: “My pastor says…” to “I have searched the Scriptures, and I know what God says.”
From: “My papa told me…” to “I have studied God’s Word for myself.”
Paul warned, “Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.” 1 Thessalonians 5:21
God did not give you a mind so that you could switch it off in the presence of a spiritual leader.
Respect authority, but test teaching.
Listen, but search.
Receive, but examine.
Learn from men, but know God for yourself.
Because when the pressure comes, when your leader is not there, when everybody around you is saying something different, you need a conviction that comes from your own encounter with God’s Word.
Some people don’t actually know what they believe, they only know what somebody told them to believe.
That is dangerous.
God wants sons and daughters who know His voice, understand His Word, and can stand firmly even when nobody is there to tell them what to think.
Don’t let another person’s voice become louder than God’s Word in your life.
Search the Scriptures, pray, ask God for understanding, study, and know Him for yourself.
Prayer:
Father, deliver me from blindly following the opinions of men.
Give me hunger for Your Word and wisdom to distinguish Your voice from the voices of men.
Help me to respect my spiritual leaders without making them a substitute for You.
Let my faith be rooted in Your Word and my relationship with You be personal and genuine. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Declaration
I will not live by “my pastor said” alone.
I will seek to know what God says.
I will search the Scriptures.
I will test what I hear.
I will know God’s Word for myself.
I will know God for myself.
My faith will be rooted in truth, not merely in the opinions of men.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
