Gain the world, lose your soul?
Text: (Mark 8:36).
“For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?”
Mark 8:36, is repeated similarly in other translations like Matthew 16:26 and Luke 9:25, highlighting that gaining worldly success is worthless if one forfeits their eternal soul. In other words, “What shall a man give in return for his soul?”.
Jesus asks this profound question to emphasize that eternal life and one’s soul are far more valuable than any earthly riches, power, or possessions.
Trading your eternal self for temporary worldly gains is the ultimate foolishness, as worldly things fade, but the soul is eternal.
This teaching follows Jesus’ call for followers to deny themselves, take up their cross, and follow Him, meaning a willingness to give up everything for Him.
Are you ready to take up your cross, and follow Jesus or you prefer this temporal world?
