What is Love?

Text: 1 John 4:7-8 (NIV)

“Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.

Message

Love is not just a feeling—it’s a divine calling. In a world where love is often confused with emotion, preference, or convenience, Scripture reminds us that true love is sacrificial, enduring, and rooted in God’s very nature.

God doesn’t merely have love—He is love. This means every act of true love we show reflects His presence in our lives. From patience with others to forgiveness, generosity, and even correction—each expression of love is an opportunity to show Christ to the world.

Jesus said,

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.”
John 13:34 (NIV)

This love is not limited by how we feel, but by how He gave—fully, freely, and forever. He laid down His life so we could be reconciled to God. That’s the model: sacrificial, unconditional, active love.

Conclusion

Love is not optional for the believer—it’s our identity and our testimony.

“By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
John 13:35 (NIV)

As you go through your day, ask:

  • Am I showing the love of Christ in how I speak, serve, and forgive?

  • Where can I grow in patience, kindness, or grace?

Let’s not love with mere words, but with actions and truth.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for loving me even when I didn’t deserve it. Help me to love others as You have loved me—selflessly, unconditionally, and with grace. Fill my heart with Your compassion so that I can be a light in a world desperate for real love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
