Coping With Unexpected And Uncertain Changes

Text: Psalms 56:3

What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.

Message

In the busyness of life, it’s all too easy to forget who God is, what he has done for us, and who we are because of him until the unexpected happens. That’s when, according to Johnson Oatman, Jr., “When upon life’s billows you are tempest-tossed” – a line from the hymn “Count Your Many Blessings.”

The line means to be violently tossed about, agitated, overwhelmed, or thrown into confusion.

What’s the sudden unexpected?

It is Mr Change! Mr Grief Situation and Mr Trauma.

It is the loss of loved ones, jobs, careers, marital bliss, good health, money, position, relationships, or other belongings. Change happens when it will,  happens when it does and makes life feel very uncertain and burdensome.

What do you do when life feels uncertain?

One response is to encourage yourself in the Lord, continue to trust in God’s love; for God is love. Anchor on God’s will to provide, move forward and trust the trial to give you God’s expected end as you stand on the promises of God. Johnson Oatman Jnr., the songwriter of the hymn “Count Your Blessings” continues with the lyrics, “When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost, Count your many blessings, name them one by one, And it will surprise you what the Lord has done”.

Another response can to be paralysed with fear, dancing with change, and finding joy by whatever means possible. Contemplate or actually give up, retreat, surrender, stop on track, curse God, or commit suicide.

Beloved, remember that building your faith in God in an uncertain world is best for you and anyone else. In the midst of changes, remember this: God never changes, and His promises are true. God watches over his word to perform it.

Conclusion

Remember and have the confidence that whatever change you’re navigating, the Bible remains grounded in the unchanging truth of God’s Word, summed, God is love. He loves you. Root yourself in Scripture and remember that the hope you have in God—no matter your circumstances – is the only way to go.
