Man Shall Not Live By Bread Alone
Text:Deuteronomy 8:3
“And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live.”
Message
Bread in the context of today’s passage covers any kind of food or liquid, not just bread itself. Put in another word, bread is food and drinks for nourishment of the body.
But life is more than bread. That’s what Jesus meant when he said man shall not live by bread alone? Man needs more than just physical sustenance in life.
You need God in your life as well as food in general. That’s why the rest of that verse says “but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.”
In Matthew 4:4, Jesus replied the Devil, “It is written and forever remains written, ‘MAN SHALL NOT LIVE BY BREAD ALONE, BUT BY EVERY WORD THAT COMES OUT OF THE MOUTH OF GOD.’”
It is not by bread alone that we live, but by everything that comes forth from the mouth of the Lord—that is, anything and everything that God said; His Word!
Both Moses and Jesus meant that people need more than the simple necessities of life to keep them alive. People need to be fed physically and spiritually.
The expression man shall not live by bread alone is frequently used to point out that worldly goods are not enough for most people; they need spiritual food fulfilment as well.
In Luke 11:28, Jesus replied, “But even more blessed are all who hear the word of God and put it into practice.”
In other word, “Even more blessed are those who hear God’s Word and guard it with their lives!”
We are to constantly profess, “Not bread alone, but you, Lord.”
Let me show you quickly in closing why I think Jesus is saying that we should trust in God, not bread.
Only the word of God is written and is an Eternal One.
Unlike His Name, you can not separate God from His word! They both are in unity and can not be in pretence.
How much of God’s word do you know, meditate, understand, and practice?
You can answer as you like, but be informed that Satan will test you. He tested Jesus using the Word upside down, with wrong motive or inappropriately, but Jesus, as usual, beat Satan to it. He told Satan in unmistaken terms the exact word!
Become a practitioner of the Word of God today. God bless you as you do in Jesus’ name. Amen.
